How I look after your information
Last updated [date it goes live]
The short version: I collect only what I need to send you the journal and my emails, I never sell it, and you can leave any time.
Who I am
This website is run by Em Nowland, trading as [registered business name], ABN [ABN], in New South Wales, Australia. When this policy says βIβ or βmeβ, that's who it means. I follow the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988.
Questions about your information can go to [contact email].
What I collect
- When you sign up: your first name and email address, and which version of the page you saw. I test two headlines to learn which one works better.
- When you buy: your name, email, postal address (for a printed journal) and what you ordered. Payments are handled by the checkout provider. I never see or store your full card number.
- When you write to me: whatever you choose to send, such as replies to my emails.
- When you visit the site: basic technical information such as your IP address, browser and the pages you view. This comes from the website host and, once I run ads, the Meta Pixel (see below).
- If you're a creator I've gifted the journal to: the postal address you give me for the parcel, and any audience information you choose to share.
I don't ask for sensitive information, such as your health or religious beliefs, and I'd rather you didn't send it.
Why I use it
- To send you the free January pages and the emails you signed up for.
- To deliver what you buy, and to send receipts and delivery updates.
- To tell you when the journal is out, and about early pricing and new things I make. You can unsubscribe whenever you like.
- To show ads to people who already know me, and to see whether those ads work.
- To answer you when you write to me.
Who I share it with
I never sell or rent your information. I share it only with the services that help me run this, and only for the reasons above:
- Kit (ConvertKit) sends my emails, holds the subscriber list and runs the checkout.
- The payment processor that Kit's checkout uses handles your payment.
- [Print partner] prints and posts your journal, and Australia Post or a courier delivers it. They get your name and postal address. If you buy the paperback on Amazon, Amazon's own privacy policy applies to that order.
- Meta (Facebook and Instagram) runs my ads. See the next section.
- My website host keeps standard server logs.
Some of these services store information outside Australia, mainly in the United States. I choose providers with strong security, and I share only what each one needs.
Cookies, the Meta Pixel and ads
When I run ads, this site uses the Meta Pixel. It tells Meta that a device visited the site, so I can show ads to people who've been here before and measure whether the ads work. It may set cookies on your browser.
I may also share subscribers' email addresses with Meta in hashed (scrambled) form, so my ads reach people who already know me rather than strangers. Meta matches them to accounts and doesn't keep the list for anything else.
You can block cookies in your browser, and change your ad settings in your Facebook or Instagram account under Ad preferences. If you'd rather I didn't include your email in my ad audiences, email me and I'll remove it.
The site's fonts are hosted on this site, so no font service sees your visit.
How long I keep it
- Email subscribers: until you unsubscribe or ask me to delete your details.
- Orders: for five years, because Australian tax law requires business records to be kept that long.
- Creator postal addresses: deleted by 31 March 2027, once the gifting is finished.
I keep information in the services above, protected by their security and my strong, unique passwords with two-step sign-in.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe with the link at the bottom of any email.
- See or correct what I hold about you by emailing me. I'll reply within 30 days.
- Ask me to delete it, except anything the law says I have to keep.
This website and journal are for adults. I don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
If something's not right
Email me first at [contact email] and I'll do my best to fix it within 30 days. If you're not happy with my answer, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Changes
If I change how I use your information, I'll update this page and the date at the top. If it's a big change, I'll email you about it as well.
